Long Overdue: Tunisia Addresses the Importance of Family Life and Conjugal Relationships in Education

Not featured in any school curriculum, the proper management of couple life, children's mental health, and building a conjugal life have finally caught the attention of Tunisian authorities. Indeed, given the growing number of divorces and instability experienced by parents and children, it was essential to question the cruel lack of family culture and the responsibilities that come with couple life. In respectable countries, school textbooks teach young people the basic elements necessary to found a family and educate children. Hoping that this will one day be implemented in Tunisia, the Ministry of Family, Women, Children, and the Elderly has taken the initiative to address this shortage. In fact, Asma Jabri, Minister of the aforementioned department, chaired a working session of the steering committee for the operational plan related to preparation and empowerment for conjugal life. This took place on Monday, February 16, 2026, at the ministry's headquarters. The session, attended by representatives of the concerned ministries, was dedicated to presenting the project's operational plan and discussing its main lines, axes, and objectives. The operational plan aims to strengthen the knowledge of future spouses about the role of the family and the values on which it is based. It also aims to enable future spouses to acquire the necessary skills to assume the different roles that come with managing the family and its resources. Additionally, it will prepare them for child education and the conception of a common life project. Furthermore, the plan aims to instill a culture of healthy communication and physical and mental health among future spouses, while also introducing them to managing wedding-related expenses. During this session, participants examined mechanisms to expand target categories and strengthen the plan's role in instilling family values in young people, relying on awareness campaigns with attractive and encouraging messages.
