Russia Ready to Mediate U.S.–Iran Peace Talks, Says Diplomat

Mikhail Oulianov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organisations in Vienna, told the Russian newspaper Izvestia that Moscow is prepared to act as a mediator in any future peace negotiations between Iran and the United States, if needed.

“Of course, if it becomes necessary, Russia is ready to provide mediation services,” the diplomat said.

Context

  • Current outlook: A revival of direct dialogue between Washington and Tehran appears unlikely at the moment.
  • Core objectives:
    • U.S. goal: Prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
    • Iranian goal: Secure relief from economic sanctions.

Both sides, Oulianov emphasized, cannot achieve these aims through military force alone.

Russian Position

  • Iran’s stance: According to Oulianov, Tehran would be receptive to Russian mediation.
  • U.S. stance: The United States has made it clear that it does not want intermediaries, believing it can handle the situation on its own.

“The Americans are actually managing this situation very poorly,” Oulianov concluded.
