Tunisian Insurance Sector Confirms Dynamic Growth in Q1 2026
According to the latest data published by the General Insurance Committee, the Tunisian insurance sector has recorded a 10.5% increase in gross revenue, reaching 1.401.4 billion dinars, compared to 1.268.5 billion dinars in the same period last year.
Significant Growth in Insurance Payments
Insurance payments to policyholders have seen a significant surge of 18.4%, reaching 585.4 million dinars by the end of March 2026.
Detailed Analysis of Sectoral Performance
A detailed analysis of sectoral performance reveals a strong surge in the life insurance branch. This branch has seen its emissions jump by 16.2%, passing from 282.5 million dinars at the end of March 2025 to 328.2 million dinars in the first quarter of 2026. As a result, life insurance now captures 23.4% of the global market share of net premiums. On the other hand, non-life insurance continues to dominate with 76.6% of the global activity. This segment generated 1.073.2 billion dinars in revenue, up 8.8% from last year.
Breakdown of Non-Life Insurance
Within the non-life category, two branches continue to dominate the Tunisian landscape. Automobile insurance remains the top contributor to the sector, with 553 million dinars in premiums issued, showing an increase of 8.4% and monopolizing 39.5% of the global market structure. Health insurance ranks second and shows a remarkable growth of 16.4% to reach 222 million dinars, increasing its market share to 15.8%.
Other Branches
Other branches have also seen growth, with fire insurance increasing by 5.8% to reach 157.6 million dinars, and transportation insurance rising by 8.2% to 29.7 million dinars. Agricultural insurance, although recording a significant increase of 14.7%, remains marginal with 2.7 million dinars in premiums, representing only 0.2% of the market. Finally, the revenue of Tunis Re has stabilized at 77.3 million dinars, corresponding to a slight growth of 1.2%.
Increased Charges for Insurance Claims
The first quarter of 2026 has been marked by a significant acceleration of insurance claims charges for insurance companies. The most spectacular increase concerns life insurance claims, which have exploded by 45.1% to reach 172.3 million dinars, compared to 118.7 million dinars in 2025, representing nearly 30% of the total services provided by the sector. For non-life insurance, indemnities paid have reached 413.1 million dinars, up 10%. The automobile branch has absorbed the largest share of disbursements with 226.8 million dinars, equivalent to 38.7% of the total sectoral, followed by the health branch, whose payments have reached 139.8 million dinars, up 17.6%.
