National Instance for the Prevention of Torture (INPT) Presents Guide to Detainees' Rights in Tunisia
The National Instance for the Prevention of Torture (INPT) presented the "Guide to Detainees' Rights in Tunisia" on Wednesday, developed in collaboration with the Al Kawakibi Center for Democratic Transitions and legal experts.
Purpose of the Guide
This guide is an orientation document that aims primarily to inform individuals about their rights during the periods of "police custody," "provisional detention," and "preventive detention," as well as the legal guarantees that protect these rights.
Content of the Guide
The guide presents the set of rights that must be guaranteed to detainees and explains the procedures for controlling detainees' rights. It also emphasizes the role of human rights organizations and institutions in monitoring the respect of these rights.
Target Audience
According to INPT President Fathi Jarray, the "Guide to Detainees' Rights in Tunisia" is addressed to:

- Lawyers
- Magistrates
- Detainees
- National and international human rights organizations
- Citizens
- Individuals on Tunisian territory
Compilation of the Guide
Jarray explained that the guide's content was compiled from national laws and international human rights standards ratified by Tunisia, as well as best practices in this field.
Objectives of the Guide
He highlighted that "there is a gap between legal provisions and their application in reality. This guide aims to reduce this gap, promote a culture of human rights, and raise awareness about individual rights for every citizen."
INPT's Work
Regarding the INPT's work, Jarray stated that the instance visits all detention and incarceration facilities as part of its monitoring work upon receiving a report, adding that "the instance records all existing violations in its reports."
