The French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, responded on Wednesday to a question posed in the National Assembly regarding the pollution caused by a chemical plant in Gabès, Tunisia. During his intervention, the minister emphasized that issues related to industrial pollution and social movements in Gabès fall under Tunisian sovereignty. He recalled that French authorities are not in a position to intervene directly in this matter. Jean-Noël Barrot also mentioned accusations spread by certain media outlets affiliated with French political parties, which wrongly accused a French company, the Roullier group, of toxic waste dumping. The minister assured that the activity of the Roullier group at its two sites in Gabès does not generate toxic waste and that its social responsibility policy is recognized locally. He stressed the need to not overwhelm French companies or representatives of the French state, while specifying that the environmental and social situation in the region remains an internal matter for Tunisia.
