Free Thyroid Screening Campaign Held at Béja Regional Hospital
A free hypothyroidism screening campaign took place this Saturday at the outpatient department of the Béja Regional Hospital. According to the regional health director, Dr. Mounir Jebali, this is the first initiative of its kind for the region and for the entire north‑west of Tunisia.
The event allowed on‑site blood tests, and the results will be communicated to the participants at a later date.
Dr. Jebali clarified that, although the campaign also covered diabetes, the focus was placed on thyroid disorders in order to detect new cases and ensure proper follow‑up, given the high prevalence of this condition in the area.
A second open‑door, free‑of‑charge day is already scheduled for 14 March. It will bring together an endocrinologist, laboratory technicians, and paramedical staff to serve between 300 and 400 citizens.
This action is part of the program launched by the Ministry of Health for the month of Ramadan. In Béja, the solidarity program also extends to the hospitals of Nefza, Amdoun, Medjez El Bab, Teboursouk, Thibar, Goubellat, and Testour.
The campaign attracted a strong turnout, especially from women. Participants welcomed the opportunity, often for the first time, to receive a specialized thyroid consultation in addition to the usual blood‑pressure and blood‑sugar checks.
