Date: May 25, 2024
Spanish health authorities have confirmed a new case of Hanta virus contamination among a Spanish citizen who was evacuated from a cruise ship that experienced a virus outbreak earlier this month.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, the patient has been placed in quarantine at the Gómez Ulla military hospital's isolation unit in Madrid after confirmation of the infection.
This is the second confirmed case among the 14 Spanish citizens evacuated to the island of Tenerife from the luxury cruise ship Hondius. The ship, which carried nearly 150 passengers and crew members from 23 countries, reported acute respiratory illnesses to the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 2.
In a statement published on the X platform, the Ministry clarified that the new case was detected among individuals already under quarantine, emphasizing that this situation "does not change the level of risk" for the general population.
Spanish health authorities continue to monitor the medical condition of the evacuated individuals to prevent further virus transmission.
Hanta virus is a rare viral disease that can cause severe respiratory or renal complications. It is typically transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents or their droppings.
