Hammam Lif Completes Removal of Beach Breakwaters

Date: Monday, September 1 2025

The municipality of Hammam Lif announced on Monday, September 1 2025, that it has completed the removal of all protective breakwaters installed on its beach.

These works, launched in October 2024, involved removing the remaining stone blocks to allow the natural flow of marine currents to return and to kick‑start the restoration of the coastal ecological balance.

The installation of eight breakwaters over 1,300 meters in the early 1980s had caused a degradation of water quality and several environmental imbalances. The blockage of the natural circulation of seawater disrupted seagrass beds, encouraging the accumulation of debris and foul odors.

With the breakwaters now gone, the municipality hopes to see water quality improve, pollution incidents decrease, and the natural dynamism of Hammam Lif’s seaside frontage restored.
