Water Situation in Dams Improves for 2024/2025 Season
The Secretary of State to the Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, in charge of Water, Hamadi Habib, stated yesterday that "the water situation in dams during the 2024/2025 season is better than the previous year due to improved inflows, although the situation remains delicate."
Key Achievements and Plans
He added, during the opening of the National Adaptation Plan to Climate Change and Food Security Week, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and with financial support from the Green Climate Fund, that the ministry has succeeded in securing drinking water needs for summer 2025 through a proactive plan based on mobilizing water resources and connecting deficit areas to neighboring networks.
Habib reviewed a number of achievements, including:
- Maintenance of dams and improvement of their productivity
- Expansion of water desalination projects
- Strengthening the use of treated water These actions are part of the activation of the National Strategic Study of Water by 2050, which aims to ensure water security and diversify its sources.
National Adaptation Plan to Climate Change and Food Security
The National Adaptation Plan to Climate Change and Food Security aims to strengthen Tunisia's capacity to address climate change through fundamental axes, such as:
- Establishing a national knowledge base on climate change adaptation to enable decision-makers to choose the best policies and procedures
- Strengthening the resilience of agricultural systems by supporting innovative investments, developing public-private partnerships, and strengthening the resilience of vulnerable rural communities through social protection mechanisms and modern digital technologies
Project Highlights
The project included:
- Conducting 16 sectoral studies in the fields of water, soil, forests, pastures, agricultural production, fishing, and aquaculture
- Establishing a national platform for monitoring the implementation of adaptation projects and evaluating their progress
- Proposing smart and innovative solutions to address the effects of climate change, particularly in the most vulnerable interior rural areas
Alignment with Development Plans
This project coincides with the preparation of the 2026/2030 Development Plan, ensuring the consistency of public policies and directing investments towards strengthening food and water security.

The National Adaptation Plan to Climate Change and Food Security Week is an opportunity to increase consultation among all stakeholders, including central administrations, national and international organizations, and representatives of civil society, in order to establish a comprehensive vision for climate change adaptation.

It is worth noting that Tunisia is preparing the final version of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which aim to integrate the country's specificities, resources, and local practices into a national integrated adaptation vision.
