Special Program to Control Stray Dogs and Insects in Tunis

A working session chaired yesterday, Monday, by the Governor of Tunis, Imed Boukhris, concluded with the development of a special program for the culling (by shooting) and capture of stray dogs at the entrances of cities, in tourist areas, gardens, and public parks.

Main Objectives

This session, dedicated to monitoring the implementation of the regional plan to combat rabies and the proliferation of stray dogs, as well as the fight against insects, also approved the development of mechanisms to control stray dogs by relying on sterilization operations. It was indicated that 80% of captured dogs and cats were vaccinated by the Regional Commissioner for Agriculture.

Next Steps

In the same context, it was decided to continue implementing joint campaigns between adjacent municipalities within the same governorate. The Governor of Tunis, Imed Boukhris, called for further strengthening of measures to preserve public health and protect citizens. To achieve this, it is necessary to develop and implement a coordinated action plan between all parties and structures involved, based on multiplying stray dog culling operations and providing the necessary logistical and human resources.

Fight Against Insects

The session also focused on monitoring the execution of the regional plan to combat insects. The Governor emphasized the need to provide all logistical and human requirements to implement the national plan after examining the current situation and defining intervention programs. In this framework, the meeting participants approved the emphasis on preventive interventions based on biological control (cleaning of wadis and water canals and drains...) and the rationalization of chemical interventions on the ground when necessary.

Cooperation and Participation

It was also emphasized that increased cooperation between municipalities is necessary to ensure the effectiveness of interventions. The working session brought together the First Delegate of the governorate, the Omda, the Head of the Regional Unit of the Municipal Police, representatives of the concerned security services, the secretaries general in charge of managing municipalities, as well as representatives of regional directorates (Agriculture, Equipment, Health, Tourism, Environment, Culture, National Agency for Environmental Protection, and Sanitation Agency, Heritage Development Agency).

Representatives from the Urban Water Directorate, the Lake Development and Investment Company, the Heritage Development Agency, the Housing Land Agency, the National Railway Company, and the Rapid Rail Network Company also participated in the meeting.
