"Stop Pollution" Campaign Renews Demands

The "Stop Pollution" campaign has renewed its demands, calling for the immediate shutdown of polluting industrial units in Gabès, which were recently responsible for leaks that caused asphyxiation cases. The campaign also demands a serious and urgent investigation into recent environmental violations, accountability from those responsible, and monitoring of the condition of affected individuals.

In a statement released at the end of last week, the "Stop Pollution" campaign called for:

  • The development of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for areas affected by industrial pollution in Gabès, including oases, beaches, and the sea.
  • The government to define a clear timeline for the implementation of a roadmap to put an end to pollution.
  • The launch of a societal dialogue to establish an alternative development model in the governorate, respectful of the environment and human beings.

The campaign also demanded:

  • The immediate implementation of the 2017 decision to dismantle polluting units in Gabès.
  • The cancellation of decisions to double phosphate production, create a green ammonia unit, and establish hydrogen industries for export, as well as the removal of phosphogypsum.

The campaign's renewed demands come as a response to the recent environmental violations and the need for urgent action to protect the health and well-being of the people and the environment in Gabès.
