Residents of Salem Beach Area Protest Against Industrial Pollution
The residents of the Salem Beach area (Chott Essalem) in the Gabès governorate took to the streets on Friday, burning tires and blocking the road leading to the Gabès industrial zone. This action comes after reports circulated that "several students from the Chott Essalem college suffered from suffocation today due to gas emissions from the units of the Tunisian Chemical Complex (CCT)," as confirmed by several protesters to the agency's journalist (TAP). The protesters stated that "the affected students were taken to the Gabès University Hospital to receive the necessary care." They threatened to "invade the industrial zone," especially since "this incident is the second of its kind in less than a month at the Chott Essalem college, following similar incidents in Ghannouch that provoked great anger among the residents," according to their statements. It's worth noting that the residents of the Salem Beach area in Gabès had already organized a protest rally on Thursday on the Militants' Square in the region. They were demonstrating against the deterioration of the local environmental situation and against the fact that a group of students from the Chott Essalem college were victims of suffocation at the end of last month due to gas emissions from the units of the Tunisian Chemical Complex.
