Return to Calm in Gabès Governorate After Days of Protests
Colonel Houssem Eddine Jebabli, spokesperson for the National Guard, announced on Saturday evening that calm had been restored in the Gabès governorate after several days of demonstrations. Security units protected the headquarters of the Tunisian Chemical Group and secured around 100,000 tons of hazardous materials, the destruction of which could have caused a catastrophe.
He emphasized the role of citizens in preventing the infiltration of certain individuals exploiting environmental issues for personal gain. These individuals, known to security and judicial authorities, are being monitored and investigated to be brought to justice.
The public prosecutor's office authorized the detention of two individuals involved in cases related to public law, while other detainees await their appearance before the court.
Colonel Jebabli recalled that law enforcement agencies had secured all peaceful demonstrations and processions, in accordance with the Constitution, despite attacks on police officers. The violence involved the use of around 500 incendiary fireworks, 800 Molotov cocktails, and blunt weapons, resulting in acts of vandalism, theft, and damage to property.
He concluded by emphasizing that the coordination of security forces and the collaboration of residents made it possible to restore order and secure sensitive sites throughout the Gabès governorate.
