Revision of the Development Model Based on Polluting Chemical Industries is Necessary

Mohamed El Kdiri, a member of the Gabès regional council, stated on Sunday, October 26, 2025, to the TAP agency that the development model based on polluting chemical industries must be revised.

The Need for a New Development Model

The deputy emphasized the need to establish a new model that ensures sustainable development, leveraging the strategic location of the Gabès governorate, its natural and human resources, as well as its modern infrastructure.

Supporting the Peaceful Movement

He also invited the authorities to positively support the ongoing peaceful movement in the region, recalling that the inhabitants are now demanding the dismantling of the polluting industrial units of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT), due to the serious risks they pose to their lives.

Protecting the Gulf of Gabès

El Kdiri stressed that it is urgent to protect the Gulf of Gabès by putting an end to the discharge of phosphogypsum in order to preserve the groundwater resources, which are already overexploited by the phosphate industry. According to him, all indicators show that the Gabès governorate could become a leader in the sectors of agriculture, clean industries, tourism, and services, once rid of industrial pollution.
