France Ranks Second in Antibiotic Consumption in Europe
With over 860 antibiotic prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year, France ranks second among the highest antibiotic-consuming countries in Europe in 2024, according to a statement released by Santé publique France on Tuesday.
Key Findings
- The use of antibiotics remained stable among children aged 0-4, but the number of prescriptions increased in the third quarter of 2024, amidst a sustained epidemic activity related to winter infections.
- Notable increases were also observed among individuals aged 65-79 and those over 80.
- Additionally, antibiotic consumption remains generally higher among women than men.
Trends and Concerns
After several years of decline since 2016, a resurgence of common winter infections, medical consultations, and consequently, antibiotic prescriptions was observed in 2021 and 2022. This trend continued in 2024. Globally, one-sixth of common bacterial infections confirmed in laboratories in 2023 were resistant to antibiotic treatments, according to the World Health Organization, which urges responsible use of these medications.
Global Context
The World Health Organization reminds us that the overuse and misuse of antibiotics contribute to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, making it essential to promote responsible prescribing and use of these medications to mitigate this threat.
