Tunisia Successfully Performs Four Organ Transplantations from a Single Donor
Tunisia has achieved a new medical milestone by successfully performing four organ transplantations from a single donor who was declared brain dead. This remarkable feat has brought new hope to patients in need of organ transplants.
Hamida Al-Alyani, the father of the donor, expressed his pride and gratitude, stating that his son had saved the lives of four patients. "My son has saved four lives... and I feel like he is still alive... I have given a new chance to my son's life," he said in a statement to the National Radio on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
The Director General of the National Center for the Promotion of Organ Transplantation, Jalel Ziadi, emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about organ donation. According to him, the main obstacle remains the low number of donors, despite an increase in recent years. "Tunisia remains a pioneer in the field of transplantation, both medically and logistically," he pointed out.
Since the beginning of the year until October 5, 2025, medical teams have performed 30 transplantations of kidneys, livers, and hearts from 10 brain-dead donors, benefiting patients suffering from renal, hepatic, or cardiac insufficiency.
Bouthayna Znad, the National Coordinator of the Center, indicated that approximately 1,800 patients are currently waiting for a kidney transplant, while around 50 patients per year require a heart transplant and a similar number need a liver transplant.
