The Issue of Food Waste
Food waste is a major challenge globally, as well as nationally, particularly in Tunisia where significant amounts of food are lost or wasted at every stage of the food value chain. In 2011, the FAO estimated that about one-third of the food produced in the world is lost or wasted. In Tunisia, this phenomenon is exacerbated by several factors, including unsustainable consumption practices, lack of awareness about the importance of food resource management, and shortcomings in the distribution and consumption chain, as well as in food resource management.
Food Waste in Tunisian Households
Food waste in Tunisian households amounts to 5% of food expenses, totaling 910 million dinars in 2021, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INC). The main foods wasted are bread (16% of consumed quantities), cereals (10%), and vegetables (7%).
