First Snowfalls of the Season Recorded in Algerian Mountains

The first snowfalls of the season were recorded this Friday in several Algerian mountain ranges, causing disruptions on roads and rescue interventions.

According to the National Gendarmerie, the National Road 15 between Tizi-Ouzou and Bouira, at the Tirourda pass (1,750 m), has become impassable. The gendarmerie is urging motorists to avoid this section and not to venture into the snowy heights.

The Civil Protection agency reports that it has rescued 21 people trapped in a bus and a car at the Tizi N'Koulal pass (1,563 m), on the RN 30, in the Djurdjura massif.

Photos and videos shared on social media show snow in other mountainous regions: Chréa, Akfadou, the Babors, Tikjda, M'sila, Aït Smail, and Sétif.

These first snowfalls come after a particularly hot and dry autumn, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 30°C, which worries farmers facing a possible drought.
