Ministry of Health Declares First National Maternal Health Day

May 20, 2026

The Ministry of Health has officially declared May 20th as the first National Maternal Health Day, to be celebrated annually under the slogan "Together for a Risk-Free Motherhood." This event marks the launch of a nationwide awareness campaign, set to run until May 31st, with the theme "Prenatal Consultations: A Safety for You and Your Child."

In an interview with the National Radio's news bulletins, Dr. Kaouther Harabech, Director of Primary Healthcare at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of maternal health and the need for a national awareness campaign. She highlighted the crucial role of prenatal consultations in protecting both mothers and newborns, particularly in light of Tunisia's high maternal mortality rate.

"Tunisia has committed to an active strategy to reduce maternal mortality during childbirth," Dr. Harabech stated. According to her, the country's maternal mortality rate stands at approximately 40 deaths per 100,000 live births, far exceeding the global average of 18 deaths per 100,000 live births. She stressed the urgency of a nationwide mobilization through these new prevention campaigns.

The launch of the National Maternal Health Day and the awareness campaign aim to raise awareness about the importance of prenatal consultations and promote a risk-free motherhood. The campaign will focus on educating the public about the benefits of regular prenatal check-ups and the role they play in ensuring a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.
