Fire Breaks Out in Douar Hicher Market, Causing Significant Damage
A fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in the daily market located on Avenue Khaled Ben Walid in Douar Hicher. The blaze caused significant material damage before being brought under control by the civil protection teams.
Firefighters Respond Quickly to Contain the Blaze
Civil protection agents from the Mannouba regional direction, accompanied by reinforcements from Tunis and Ariana, intervened to bring the fire under control, according to a security source cited by TAP. The source noted that significant human and logistical resources, including fire trucks and specialized equipment, were mobilized to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby businesses, including the Ennour Mosque.
Initial Investigation Points to Accumulation of Debris as Contributing Factor
Preliminary findings suggest that the accumulation of trash, wood debris, and second-hand clothing contributed to the spread of the fire. However, the prompt and effective response of the firefighters prevented any danger to nearby residents.
Eleven Shops Affected, Official Investigation Launched
According to initial estimates, eleven shops were affected by the fire. An official investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the fire, with authorities ruling out the possibility of a malicious act.
Eyewitnesses Describe the Fire as Spontaneous
Witnesses on the scene reported that the fire appeared to break out spontaneously in a first shop, before spreading to adjacent stalls selling scrap metal and second-hand clothing. The swift response of the civil protection teams was praised by residents, who credited them with preventing further damage to the commercial area.
Municipal Official Assures Minor Damage, Repairs to Follow
Lamia Rahali, Secretary General of the municipality, told TAP that the damage was minor and that repairs would be carried out shortly. She also announced that the modernization project of the new market, which began in January with an investment of 253,000 dinars, is now in its final phase. The project aims to provide new premises for traders and put an end to informal trading and unauthorized occupation of Avenue Khaled Ibn El Walid.
