Crackdown on Illegal Slaughterhouses: Protecting Consumer Health and Safety
As part of its efforts to protect consumer health and combat the phenomenon of clandestine slaughter, the National Food Safety Authority, in coordination with security services, conducted a series of interventions in the governorates of Monastir, Ben Arous, and Ariana last week.
Monastir: Closure of Two Illegal Slaughterhouses
In Monastir, two clandestine slaughterhouses operating without legal authorization and failing to meet sanitary standards were raided. The teams seized:
- 758 kg of poultry
- 333 kg of red meat
- Various unfit-for-consumption offal, stored in conditions that did not respect basic food safety rules
Ben Arous: Seizure of Unfit Poultry
In Ben Arous, the National Food Safety Authority, in coordination with the El Awina anti-terrorism unit and the municipal guard, intervened at a clandestine poultry slaughterhouse in Nessan. The operation resulted in the seizure of:
- 97 kg of unfit-for-consumption poultry
- The recovery of approximately 320 live poultry, which were subsequently reintroduced into official distribution channels
Ariana: Seizure of Poultry and Closure of Illegal Slaughterhouses
In Ariana, two seizure reports were drawn up for 142 kg of poultry from clandestine slaughterhouses. Additionally, three other reports concerned 1,414 kg of live poultry, which were reintegrated into distribution channels in accordance with current regulations, with the support of the municipal guard in the Ettadhamen neighborhood.
Commitment to Consumer Protection
All operations were conducted in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, and establishments that failed to meet food safety standards were closed. The National Food Safety Authority reminds that these actions aim to protect consumers and strengthen vigilance against any breaches of sanitary rules.
