Tunisia and Algeria Commemorate the 68th Anniversary of the Sakiet Sidi Youssef Events

On the instructions of the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, the Head of Government, Sarra Zafrani Zanzeri, presided over the commemoration ceremony of the 68th anniversary of the Sakiet Sidi Youssef events, alongside the Algerian Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, on Sunday, February 8, 2026. This commemoration symbolizes the depth of the historical and fraternal ties between Tunisia and Algeria, as well as the common loyalty to the memory of the martyrs of both countries.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking personalities from both sides. The Algerian Prime Minister was accompanied by the Minister of Interior, Local Communities, and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, the Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Abdelmalek Tacherift, the Algerian Ambassador to Tunisia, Azzouz Baâlal, the Wali of Souk Ahras, Abdelkarim Zenaï, and several officials and advisors.

The Tunisian Head of Government was accompanied by the Minister of Interior, Khaled Nouri, the President of the Fidaa Institution, Ahmed Jaafar, and the Governor of Kef, Walid Kaâbia.

On this occasion, the municipality of Sakiet Sidi Youssef hosted a bilateral meeting between Sarra Zafrani Zanzeri and Sifi Ghrieb. The discussions focused on the evolution of Tunisian-Algerian cooperation in various fields, with a reaffirmation of the political will of the leaders of the two countries, Kais Saied and Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to elevate bilateral relations to the rank of a global and solidarity strategic partnership.

The two officials also welcomed the results of the 23rd session of the Tunisian-Algerian Joint Commission, held in Tunis on December 12, 2025, which marked an important stage in bilateral relations and ended with the signing of 25 agreements.

They emphasized the need for rigorous follow-up of the decisions and recommendations issued by this commission in order to quickly translate them into concrete projects and cooperation programs with a strong economic and social impact.

Emphasis was placed on the importance of developing border regions, considered a strategic lever for economic and social integration. The two parties highlighted the need to adopt a new development approach aimed at transforming these areas into dynamic economic hubs and spaces for commercial and tourist exchanges, contributing to the reduction of regional disparities, job creation, and stability reinforcement.

The meeting also highlighted the high level of security and military cooperation and coordination between Tunisia and Algeria, described as a model of bilateral cooperation. This coordination constitutes a bulwark against common threats, including terrorism, smuggling, organized cross-border crime, and irregular migration.

The two parties also stressed the importance of continued consultation on major regional and international issues, in a context marked by rapid and complex global changes requiring increased convergence of efforts and positions.

At the end of the meeting, the Head of Government and the Algerian Prime Minister visited the Sakiet Sidi Youssef commemorative monument, where an official ceremony was held with the execution of the Tunisian and Algerian national anthems, the laying of a wreath, and the recitation of the Fatiha in memory of the martyrs of both countries.

The commemoration ended with a visit to a documentary exhibition tracing the main stages of the common struggle of the two peoples, recalling that the Sakiet Sidi Youssef events remain a strong symbol of solidarity, fraternity, and shared combat.
