Tunisian Farmers' Union President Slams Online Mutton Sales Ahead of Aïd

Midani Dhaoui, President of the Tunisian Farmers' Union, has deemed the online sale of muttons via Instagram as unacceptable, urging citizens to instead opt for weekly markets. This statement was made during his appearance on the radio.

Dhaoui emphasized that a price increase of 100 to 150 dinars per mutton compared to last year was considered acceptable. However, he deemed it inadmissible for the price hike to reach 500 dinars for a single lamb.

The President of the union called on citizens to exercise discernment and purchase affordable sacrifices, priced between 900 and 1,500 dinars. He also noted that the breeder had already sold their livestock to intermediaries two months prior.

Dhaoui further pointed out that the purchasing power of citizens did not allow for the acquisition of muttons at exorbitant prices, according to his estimation.

Finally, he stated that despite the decline in livestock, animals remain available in markets. He recalled that the needs of Tunisian families amount to approximately 950,000 heads, while the livestock shortage rate ranges between 20% and 25%.
