National Eye Health Day: Restoring Vision for 1,000 Underprivileged Patients
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Health, the association "One Day One Dream" is launching the second National Eye Health Day. This nationwide mobilization, set to take place in 48 public and private hospitals across the country, aims to restore the vision of 1,000 underprivileged patients.
Scheduled for May 23, 2026, in 28 public hospitals and 20 private healthcare facilities spread across various regions of the Republic, according to the association's president, Dorra Karra Ali Mouelhi, the day will be a humanitarian and medical operation of national scope.
In an interview on the national radio show "Clinique médicale" on May 15, 2026, the association's president emphasized that the primary objective is to provide medical care to approximately 1,000 patients suffering from cataracts. The targeted beneficiaries are individuals holding reduced-rate healthcare cards. Mouelhi highlighted that the total number of patients requiring this surgical intervention currently stands at around 1,500 cases nationwide.
The president stressed the importance of solidarity in helping these patients and invited healthcare professionals, businesses, and citizens to actively participate in this humanitarian effort. This is to cover the immediate needs of funding, providing crystalline implants (intraocular lenses), medical consumables, and specific medications.
"This initiative represents a concrete step towards restoring vision and improving quality of life," she said, adding that the success of this day relies on a comprehensive and secure care protocol. The association's president guaranteed that the care will not stop at the surgical act. The device, she noted, includes the free provision of implants and necessary medical treatments, as well as obligatory post-operative follow-up care planned from the day after the intervention. Regular medical monitoring will also be maintained in the medium term to ensure the patients' recovery.
This commendable initiative aims to restore the vision of hundreds of Tunisians, offering them a concrete opportunity to regain their autonomy and improve their quality of life in a sustainable manner.
