Urban Water Administration Launches Maintenance Interventions for Hydraulic Infrastructures

The urban water administration within the Tunisian Ministry of Equipment and Housing has launched necessary interventions to maintain and preserve its hydraulic infrastructures in preparation for the autumn season and heavy rainfall. To date, 70% of these structures have already undergone intervention.

Dredging and Cleaning of Over 2,400 km of Canals

In an interview given on Thursday, September 11, 2025, on the "Youm Saïd" program on National Radio, Chokri Khelifi, Director of the Urban Water Administration, indicated that these interventions included the dredging and cleaning of over 2,400 km of canals and infrastructures, with the aim of protecting cities from flooding. According to him, the budget allocated to his administration for the year 2025 amounts to 36 million dinars for the maintenance of these infrastructures. However, he emphasized that this amount remains insufficient given the scope of the projects.

35% of Flood Protection Projects Completed

Regarding the Greater Tunis area, the Director revealed that the progress of flood protection projects had reached 35%. He also called on municipalities to support the Ministry's efforts by developing a master plan for rainwater drainage, specifying that the Ministry of Equipment's resources are at their disposal. He also urged municipalities to develop urban planning schemes to limit anarchic constructions.

Call to Citizens to Preserve Hydraulic Infrastructures

Finally, Chokri Khelifi invited citizens to play their part in a civic manner by actively participating in the protection of infrastructures. He asked them not to throw waste, particularly construction debris, into storm drains and not to build in low-lying areas, which are exposed to flood risks.
