Customs Foil Attempt to Smuggle Archaeological Artifact Out of the Country
The General Directorate of Customs has announced that, in coordination with the security services at Enfidha-Hammamet Airport, they have successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle an archaeological artifact out of the national territory.
The customs authorities, in collaboration with the airport's security services, were able to seize a stone sculpture representing a lion's head from a foreign national who was attempting to leave the country with the artifact hidden among their luggage.
After examination by the National Heritage Institute (INP), it was found that the sculpture possessed significant archaeological and historical value. A report was drawn up, and the artifact was handed over to the National Heritage Institute for conservation and further action.
The successful interception of this artifact highlights the effectiveness of the collaboration between customs and security services in protecting the country's cultural heritage. The incident also underscores the importance of vigilance in preventing the illicit trade of archaeological artifacts, which are an integral part of a nation's history and identity.
