Energy Transition in Tunisia: Current Pace Insufficient to Meet National Targets
Omar Taïeb, a member of the executive board of the Tunisian Organization for Clean Energy, stated on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, that the current pace of energy transition in Tunisia is not sufficient to achieve the objectives set by the national energy mastery strategy. This strategy aims to increase the share of renewable energies to 35% by 2030.
As a guest on the radio show "Yahdouth fi Tounes" broadcast on national radio, he emphasized the importance of the renewable energy sector in creating jobs, generating wealth, and reducing pressure on energy demand. He also called for a revision of the current laws and regulations, particularly with regard to the concession system, which currently requires the operator to be foreign. Taïeb advocated for opening the market to Tunisian investors.
In the same context, he stressed the need to digitize the study of files related to the connection of photovoltaic power plants to the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG). This move is expected to streamline the process and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid.
