Fishermen in El Haouaria, Nabeul Governorate, Continue Protests Demanding Urgent Action
Protesters Block Delegation Office, Decrying Catastrophic Situation at Port
Fishermen in El Haouaria, a coastal town in Nabeul Governorate, have continued their protests in front of the local delegation office, highlighting the dire situation at the fishing port. The protesters are calling on local and regional authorities to intervene urgently to address the issues affecting their livelihoods and maritime activities.
Demands for Sustainable Solutions and Infrastructure Improvements
The protesters are demanding that the authorities implement sustainable solutions to improve the port's infrastructure, clean the harbor of invasive marine algae known as "dharie," and ensure decent working conditions to ensure the long-term viability of the fishing sector.
Port in Critical Condition, Says Fisherman
In an interview with Diwan FM, Lotfi Chagour, a fisherman and shipowner at the El Haouaria fishing port, stated that the port has been in a critical situation for several years, with no serious intervention to rehabilitate or clean it. He noted that the accumulation of marine algae has severely hindered the daily work of fishermen and has resulted in the immobilization of nearly 80 boats docked at the port.
Authorities Remain Unresponsive to Fishermen's Demands
According to Chagour, fishermen have repeatedly contacted the relevant authorities to present their demands, but their requests have gone unanswered so far. The situation at the El Haouaria fishing port remains dire, with the protesters continuing their protests to draw attention to their plight.
