Consumers May Face Challenges in Claiming Rights After Buying Aïd Sheep

Lotfi Khaldi, Vice-President of the Organisation de Défense du Consommateur (ODC), stated on Friday, May 22, 2026, that citizens may encounter difficulties in asserting their rights after purchasing Aïd sheep, despite the law protecting consumers.

During an interview on Radio Nationale, Mr. Khaldi explained that the problem lies in the nature of the product itself. He clarified that the livestock in Tunisia is not identified by a marking system, lacking both a mark and a serial number to track each animal.

In the event of an animal's death or the discovery of apparent or hidden defects after purchase, it becomes particularly challenging to return the animal to the seller. This is due to the strong resemblance between the animals and the risk of the seller denying any responsibility.

The spokesperson therefore invited citizens to thoroughly inspect the animal's condition before acquisition, conducting a meticulous examination to ensure its good health and the absence of diseases.

Mr. Khaldi also emphasized that being accompanied by an experienced person during the purchase is an essential step to guarantee the choice of a healthy and defect-free animal.

Finally, Lotfi Khaldi recommended not taking children to the sales locations, so that their emotional attachment to certain lambs does not influence the final choice of parents in a biased manner.
