Approaching Eid Al-Adha on May 27, Geriatric Specialist Warns Seniors Against Overindulgence

As Eid Al-Adha approaches on May 27, Dr. Afef Hammami, a specialist in geriatrics, has urged seniors to avoid excessive consumption of red meat, fizzy drinks, and sugars, highlighting that public hospital emergency services have seen a significant surge in senior admissions during festive days due to unbalanced diets.

In a statement to Tunis Afrique Presse, the specialist noted that emergency cases are divided between acute hypertension, high blood sugar spikes, heart attacks, strokes, and severe constipation, reminding that the elderly body cannot handle large quantities of fatty meats.

Dr. Hammami's Recommendations:

  • Limit meat intake to 100-120 grams per meal
  • Avoid over-grilled meats and offal, rich in saturated fats
  • Limit fizzy drinks, sugars, and starchy foods
  • Consume salads and vegetables at every meal
  • Drink enough water throughout the day
  • Engage in regular walking
  • Avoid late-night meals

Dr. Hammami also urged families to promptly take their elderly relatives to the emergency room in case of intense fatigue, shortness of breath, vomiting, chest pain, bloating, or elevated blood sugar levels.

By following these guidelines, seniors can enjoy Eid Al-Adha while maintaining their health and well-being.
