Aïd el-Adha 2026: Date de célébration en Algérie
According to calculations published by the International Astronomical Centre regarding the observation of the crescent moon in the month of Dhou al-Hijja 1447 of the Hijri calendar, Aïd el-Adha 2026 is expected to be celebrated in Algeria on Wednesday, May 27th.
Observation du croissant lunaire
In a statement released on Thursday, May 14th, the centre announced that the observation of the crescent moon will take place on Sunday, May 17th 2026 across the Muslim world, marking the beginning of the process to determine the official dates of the sacred month and the religious holiday.
Calculs scientifiques
According to these scientific calculations, Monday, May 18th 2026 should correspond to the first day of the month of Dhou al-Hijja, paving the way for the celebration of Aïd el-Adha on Wednesday, May 27th in most Muslim countries.
Observation du croissant
The centre notes that the observation of the crescent moon will be possible using telescopes in certain regions such as East Asia, Southern Africa, and South America. At the naked eye, it can be observed in several zones, including Central and Western Asia, a large part of North Africa (including Algeria), and several regions in the Americas.
Algérie
In Algeria, however, the official confirmation of the date of Aïd el-Adha does not rely on astronomical calculations, but rather on the National Commission for the Observation of the Crescent Moon, which is part of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Wakfs. This instance will meet after the observation to announce the definitive date of the religious holiday.
Jour de Arafat
The same procedure will also be used to determine the date of the Day of Arafat, corresponding to the 9th day of the month of Dhou al-Hijja, considered the climax of the pilgrimage to Mecca. Aïd el-Adha is then celebrated the following day, on the 10th day of the lunar month.
