Heavy Toll and Maximum Alert: 29 Drowning Deaths in April
Speaking on the radio, Lieutenant Colonel Khalil Mechri, Director of Operations at the National Office for Civil Protection, reported 29 drowning deaths in the month of April alone. These tragic incidents occurred both at sea and in dams across the country.
The official noted that the victims were predominantly young people, including several high school students who drowned during the "Bac Sport" exams.
In light of this alarming situation, Lieutenant Colonel Mechri issued a call for caution, emphasizing that the current maritime conditions are particularly hazardous. Strong underwater currents and persistent meteorological instability make the sea unpredictable.
The officer urged citizens to exercise patience and avoid taking unnecessary risks, reminding them that the beach surveillance system is not yet operational at this time of year. The absence of lifeguards on the coast significantly increases the risks for reckless swimmers.
