Minister of National Defense Warns Against Uncontrolled Drone Proliferation

The Minister of National Defense, Khaled Shili, warned against the proliferation of drones and the growing risks associated with their uncontrolled use, both nationally and internationally. Speaking on Tuesday at the Bardo Palace during a joint plenary session dedicated to examining his department's budget, the Minister emphasized that the multiplication of these devices, used in both military and civilian fields, constitutes a major challenge for national security.

Efforts to Regulate Drone Use

To address this phenomenon, the Ministry of Defense has held several consultations with concerned ministries, including the Ministry of Transport. These discussions led to the creation of a commission under the General Directorate of Civil Aviation, tasked with developing a regulatory text governing the use of drones in Tunisian territory. This text has already been finalized and submitted for review to the various stakeholders.

Preventive Approach

In a preventive approach, the Defense Department is also collaborating with the Ministry of Interior to conduct joint exercises aimed at improving rapid response capabilities in the event of an incident or threat involving drones.

Developing Neutralization Capabilities

The Minister stressed the need for the Tunisian army to develop its capabilities to neutralize these devices, particularly through the mastery of jamming systems. He also called for strengthened cooperation and information sharing between the various institutions concerned to monitor technological developments in this sensitive area.

Recent Incident Under Investigation

Finally, regarding the recent incident involving the Somoud fleet at the port of Sidi Bou Saïd, Khaled Shili specified that the matter remains "under investigation" and is being closely monitored by the competent authorities.
