How Travelers Reach Djerba During the Holy Month

During this period, many Djerbians return home to spend the sacred month with their families. Those arriving from Europe land without issue at Djerba‑Zarzis Airport, but travelers coming from the north or from inland prefer the shortest route: the Boughrara–Ajim ferry.

Weather‑Related Ferry Challenges

Because the weather is not always favorable, the ferry faces difficulties caused by high and low tides, according to a local official. The coastline is under threat, and the Ministry of Equipment is expected to intervene together with APAL to address the problem.

On Tuesday, 17 February, authorities were forced to evacuate several cars. The same likely happened to the ferry departing Ajim for Al‑Jorf.

Alternative Route: The Roman Road

So, how can you reach or leave Djerba? The simplest solution is to circumvent the ferry and take the Roman road that connects Djerba to Zarzis, a stretch of about 8 km.

Note: Even this road is still under renovation; the works have not been completed yet. Oddly, this dates back to the time when Hamadi Jebali was Prime Minister.
