Djerba Island Sets National Model for Energy Transition

Djerba Island has established itself as a national model for energy transition since the installation of 3,415 LED public lighting lamps, covering nearly 50% of its territory, as part of a project led by the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME). Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), this relamping project has reduced electricity consumption by 50%, while avoiding the emission of around 900 tons of carbon dioxide per year. According to data published by UNDP-Tunisia on its social media, the local community is realizing an estimated annual financial savings of around 630,000 dinars. More than 60,000 inhabitants are now benefiting from more efficient public lighting, which contributes to improving road safety and the comfort of nighttime travel. Beyond its immediate impact, this initiative is part of the national strategy for energy management and promotion of sustainable solutions at the local level. The experience of Djerba illustrates the potential of energy-efficient public lighting as a lever for local development, rationalization of public expenditure, and environmental protection, paving the way for its generalization in other regions of the country.
