English Football Association (FA) Investigates Allegations Against Burnley Midfielder Hannibal Mejbri
The English Football Association (FA) is examining allegations that Burnley midfielder and Tunisian international Hannibal Mejbri spat at Leeds United supporters during a match between the two teams on Saturday at Turf Moor stadium as part of the local championship. Lancashire Police confirmed that they are "reviewing the facts" regarding the incident, after receiving an official complaint from a Leeds supporter who was in the visiting team's fan section inside the stadium. Mejbri (22 years old) came on as a substitute in the 83rd minute of the match and received a yellow card in stoppage time, following an altercation with Swedish player Gabriel Gudmundsson after a rough tackle on a Leeds defender near the touchline. The BBC network reported that the FA is currently reviewing these allegations, but has not yet opened a full official investigation into the incident. The police stated that they are "aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the championship match between Burnley and Leeds United that took place at Turf Moor stadium on Saturday." They added: "We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to verify the facts." For its part, Leeds management confirmed being aware of the allegations but has not commented on them. As for Burnley Football Club, which won its second victory of the season and won the match 2-0, it refused to make any statement.
