Tunisian Health Ministry Advises Diabetic Patients to Prepare for a Safe Ramadan Fast
The Ministry of Health has urged diabetic patients to plan ahead for a healthy fast, sharing a video presented by Dr. Chiraz Rached Amrouche of the National Institute Zouhair Kallel for Nutrition and Food Technology, released on Thursday.
Key recommendations from the specialist
According to Dr. Amrouche, a rigorous preparation for a safe fast involves three essential steps:
- Risk assessment – The primary care physician must classify the diabetic patient based on the health risks that fasting may pose.
- Therapeutic adjustments – The specialist should modify the treatment plan, including the timing, dosage, and quantity of medications (especially insulin) to be taken during Ramadan.
- Nutritional re‑education & activity – The physician must:
- Design a personalised dietary program that fits the patient’s medical profile.
- Encourage the patient to maintain regular physical activity throughout the month of Ramadan.
Continuous glucose monitoring
Dr. Amrouche also stressed the importance of self‑monitoring blood glucose levels. Patients should break their fast immediately if they experience a significant drop or rise in glucose, to avoid complications.
