The 2024 exercise was marked by the continuation of the deterioration of the banking sector's asset quality for the third consecutive year, linked to the difficult economic context, according to the risk analysis related to asset quality presented in the 2024 Annual Report on Banking Supervision, published on Saturday by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

The breakdown of classified claims by type of economic agent shows a continuous deterioration for private enterprises, with a rate reaching 19.9% at the end of 2024, mainly due to the increase in non-performing loans to small and medium-sized enterprises. The share of classified claims in individual commitments also slightly increased, standing at 8% at the end of 2024.

The breakdown of classified claims by sector reveals a strong concentration on industry, construction, and trade, which accounted for 64.5% of the outstanding classified claims in 2024, compared to 62.8% in 2023. Together, these three sectors represent 54.7% of the banking sector's total commitments.

Furthermore, the classified claim rates of the various sectors have generally experienced unfavorable developments in 2024, with the exception of the agricultural sector, whose rate returned to 21.5% compared to 22.3% in 2023.
