Gafsa Leads in Agricultural Well Drilling Requests Despite Hydric Stress
On Monday, May 11, 2026, a meeting was held at the Gafsa Governorate headquarters to commemorate National Agriculture Day. Mongi Afi, the head of the Regional Delegation for Agricultural Development (CRDA), stated in an interview with the radio that the Gafsa Governorate holds the top spot nationwide in terms of requests for agricultural well drilling.
Afi noted that the region has seen an average of over 120 requests per session, despite being classified as a "red zone" where new well drilling is strictly prohibited due to hydric stress.
Rise in Illicit Well Drilling
Afi also highlighted the difficulty in accurately tracking the number of unauthorized wells, while confirming that their number remains high based on infraction reports. For the current year 2026, 120 infraction reports have already been filed, compared to 200 reports from the previous year.
