No Major Concerns Expected from Incoming Depression from Morocco
Environmental engineer and climatology expert Hamdi Hached assured on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, that there are no major concerns regarding the expected atmospheric depression coming from Morocco, and no significant impact is forecasted on Tunisia. Speaking on Jawhara FM, Hached mentioned the possibility of locally significant precipitation over the next few days, calling on citizens to be vigilant, particularly in avoiding areas prone to flooding and low-lying regions, while warning against any form of alarmism.
Precautions and Infrastructure Maintenance
The expert emphasized the need for regular maintenance of infrastructure, especially stormwater drainage systems, and the development of spaces capable of absorbing water to prevent accumulation and uncontrolled runoff, which could turn certain residential areas into high-risk zones.
Reassurance and Importance of Caution
Hached sought to reassure the population by stating that recent events in some Moroccan cities cannot be replicated in Tunisia under the same conditions, while stressing the importance of prudence and adherence to safety guidelines.
Understanding the Risks of Flooding
He further explained that prolonged periods of drought do not exclude the possibility of flooding but can, on the contrary, increase its severity due to soil hardening and reduced capacity to absorb rainwater quickly.
Urban Planning and Flood Risk
The expert warned against urban expansion into old riverbeds and low-lying areas, reminding that dry riverbeds can suddenly resume their flow when meteorological conditions become favorable.
Scientific Context of Recent Events in Morocco
In this context, Hached clarified that the phenomena recently observed in Morocco are scientifically classified as urban floods, caused by very heavy rainfall concentrated over an extremely short period, sometimes less than an hour, exceeding the capacity of stormwater drainage systems.
