It is with Deep Sorrow that We Announce the Passing of Professor Saayda Ben Becher
We have learned with profound sadness of the passing of Professor Saayda Ben Becher, which occurred on the night of Monday to Tuesday. Her departure has sparked a strong emotion within the medical community and leaves an indelible memory for generations of patients, families, and caregivers.
A Distinguished Career
For over twenty-seven years (1996-2024), Professor Ben Becher led the pediatric department at Béchir Hamza Children's Hospital in Tunis with unwavering passion. Her career was a rapid ascent in the service of knowledge: she earned her doctorate in 1978, specialized in pediatrics in 1984, and then completed all the stages of her hospital-university career - Assistant (1993), Master of Conferences (2000), and finally became a Professor and Head of Department in 1994.
A Life of Dedication and Compassion
Her commitment to pediatrics was measured by the long hours, sleepless nights, and daily involvement without fail. Beyond her teaching duties, thesis supervision, and research at the Faculty of Medicine in Tunis, she was known for her proximity and humanity. She was always available, with her legendary smile and patience, to children from all over Tunisia, their families, and her young colleagues.
Institutional Leadership and Legacy
Professor Ben Becher also left her mark on her field through her institutional leadership. She presided over the Tunisian Society of Pediatrics for six years (2005-2011) and was Honorary President of the Association of French-speaking Pediatricians, testifying to her influence beyond borders.
A Family Legacy of Commitment
Her selflessness for science and dedication to childhood have their roots in her family history. As the daughter of a large landowner concerned about the local population and Fatma Ben Abdallah, a Tunisian cultural figure, she grew up in a universe rich in values of commitment. She became the worthy heir, becoming a renowned pediatrician recognized for her scientific value, work, and publications.
A Lasting Memory
Professor Saayda Ben Becher will remain in our memories as a worthy disciple of Professor Béchir Hamza, the father of Tunisian pediatrics. Tunisia has lost a great lady of medicine.
