American Cinema Icon, Robert Redford, Passes Away at 89
American cinema legend, Robert Redford, has passed away on Tuesday, September 16, at the age of 89. His agency, Rogers & Cowan PMK, confirmed the sad news, which was first reported by the New York Times.
In a statement, Cindi Berger, the agency's general manager, specified that the actor from "The Sting" and "Out of Africa" died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Provo, Utah, surrounded by his loved ones. No cause of death has been specified.
A Critically Acclaimed Career
A pivotal figure in the 1960s to 1990s, Robert Redford left his mark on cinema history with memorable roles in cult films such as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Horse Whisperer," and "Our Best Years." Beyond his acting talent, he was also recognized as a director, winning the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Director for "Ordinary People" in 1981. He also received an Honorary Oscar in 2002 and an Honorary César in 2019 for his lifetime achievements.
A Retirement That Wasn't
Officially retired from acting since 2018, after the film "The Old Man and The Gun," Redford had stated to Entertainment Weekly that he was "done with acting." However, he made an unexpected comeback in March 2025 with a surprise role in the series "Dark Winds," for which he was also an executive producer.
