Legendary Egyptian Singer Hani Shaker Passes Away at 73
Renowned Egyptian singer Hani Shaker, affectionately known as "the Prince of Arabic Song," has passed away on Sunday at the age of 73 in Paris, according to his manager Khadr Aknan. Shaker leaves behind a rich artistic career spanning over half a century, marked by hundreds of songs, particularly in the realm of classical romance, of which he was one of the most iconic symbols.
According to close sources, the artist's health had significantly deteriorated in the hours leading up to his death. He had almost completely lost consciousness due to a critical drop in oxygen levels in his blood, severely affecting his brain functions. Shaker was hospitalized in intensive care at the Foch Hospital, placed on life support, surrounded by his wife and son. Despite the efforts of medical teams, his body did not respond to treatment.
The Syndicate of Musical Professions, led by Mostafa Kamel, paid tribute to the late artist, highlighting that the Egyptian and Arabic artistic scene has lost one of its most notable figures.
Across the Arab world, artists and personalities have expressed their sorrow on social media, praising Shaker's exceptional career and his significant role in the evolution of Arabic song. Official and popular funeral services are expected to honor his memory.
The artist had been suffering from complications related to a delicate surgical intervention in his colon for several weeks. His condition worsened after a severe hemorrhage that required a massive transfusion of platelets, followed by a sudden cardiac arrest, which doctors managed to reverse.
Although a recovery phase had begun, his prolonged stay in intensive care led to significant muscle weakness. He was then transferred to France to follow a specialized rehabilitation program. His condition had momentarily improved before experiencing a fatal relapse due to respiratory insufficiency.
Rest in peace.
