Renowned Tunisian Historian and Academic Khalifa Chater Passes Away at 90

Tunisian Ministry of Culture Pays Tribute to the Late Scholar

Tunisian historian and academic Khalifa Chater, a leading figure in French-language research on modern and contemporary Tunisia, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 90.

In a statement released in the late afternoon, the Ministry of Culture hailed Chater as an "erudite" and extended its condolences to the Tunisian intellectual community.

A professor emeritus at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences in Tunis since 1972, Chater dedicated his career to studying the social, political, and pre-colonial mutations of Tunisia in the 19th century.

As a pioneer of the post-independence French-speaking Tunisian historical school, Chater held a 3rd cycle doctorate (1974) and a State doctorate (1981) from the University of the Sorbonne in Paris.

Beyond his academic achievements, Chater led several major cultural and documentary institutions in the country, including the Centre culturel international d'Hammamet (1978), the Institut supérieur de documentation (1987-1996), and the Bibliothèque nationale de Tunisie as director general from 1997 to 2002.

The historian left behind numerous reference works written in French. The University of Tunis editions published his major early works: "Insurrection et répression dans la Tunisie du XIXe siècle" in 1978, followed by "Dépendance et mutations de la Tunisie précoloniale (1815-1857)" in 1984.

His recent research focused on the 20th century, with "L'ère Bourguiba : L'histoire et les révélations" published in 2021 by AC Éditions, and his final book, "La dynastie husseinite (1705-1957)", released in 2025 by Nirvana editions.

Since 2008, Chater presided over the Commission de stratégie de la traduction, a body dedicated to promoting Tunisian cultural presence on the global cultural scene, affiliated with the Tunis Institute of Translation.
