Ferid Ben Tanfous, a legendary figure in the Tunisian banking sector, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the age of 92. His demise marks the loss of a key player and historic builder of the Tunisian economy and finance.
A Distinguished Career
A jurist by training, Ferid Ben Tanfous became an expert in economics and finance, quickly distinguishing himself within the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), where he rose through the ranks to participate in major reforms of the country's financial system. His career led him to head several major financial institutions in the country, including the Tunisian Union of Banks (UTB), the Tunisian Economic Development Bank (BDET), the National Agricultural Bank (BNA), and notably the Arab Tunisian Bank (ATB), which he led for many years. Under his direction, the ATB became one of the most important and influential private banks in the country.
A Visionary Leader
Renowned for his strategic vision, technical expertise, and management skills, Mr. Ben Tanfous implemented profound reforms to modernize the institutions he led. He was also known for advocating for the restructuring of the Tunisian banking system, believing that the market had too many establishments relative to its size, and supporting the idea of mergers and strategic integrations based on performance and governance.
