Tunisian Customs Begins Preparations for Return of Expatriates Ahead of Summer 2026 Season
The Tunisian Customs has started preparations for the return of Tunisians residing abroad (TRE) in anticipation of the 2026 summer season, with the aim of ensuring smooth reception conditions at ports, airports, and border posts.
According to Chokri Jabri, the official spokesperson for the Tunisian Customs, these measures include strengthening the number of qualified personnel, mobilizing necessary equipment, and developing digital services to simplify customs procedures.
Speaking on Express Fm on Thursday, Jabri highlighted that the digital applications "Rokhsati" and "Amtiati" are among the main tools made available to Tunisians abroad to speed up administrative procedures and reduce waiting times.
The official called on TRE to use the "Amtiati" application, which allows users to prepare a list of luggage in advance and submit an electronic declaration before their trip.
Regarding customs benefits for Tunisians residing abroad, Jabri reminded that anyone over 18 years old can import personal effects and objects with a maximum value of 5,000 dinars per year, in one or several installments. However, this measure does not apply to commercial or professional goods, which remain subject to prior authorization from the Ministry of Commerce.
Regarding foreign currencies, Jabri explained that TRE are allowed to freely introduce amounts in foreign currency, provided they declare any amount exceeding 20,000 dinars. Failure to comply with this obligation exposes the offender to sanctions provided for in the foreign exchange regulations, including financial penalties.
The Customs spokesperson also reviewed the "FCR" regime related to the importation of vehicles. He reminded that Tunisians residing abroad benefit from a total or partial exemption from duties and taxes once every ten years when importing or acquiring a private car, motorcycle, or professional vehicle.
According to Jabri, the partial exemption varies between 25% and 30% of duties and taxes, depending on the characteristics of the vehicle concerned.
