Heatwave Alert: National Plan to Protect Forests and Crops from Wildfires Unveiled

As the heatwave looms, Lieutenant Colonel Khalil Mechri, head of the Operations Department at the National Office for Civil Protection, has unveiled a comprehensive proactive strategy on Monday, May 4, 2026. This global plan aims to protect the country's forest heritage and agricultural crops from the scourge of wildfires.
Speaking on the radio, the official announced that this roadmap will soon be submitted to the Ministers of the Interior and Agriculture for final validation.
Technology at the Forefront of Reactivity
For this campaign, the Civil Protection is relying on a major innovation: the use of drones. These aircraft, piloted by mobile brigades, will enable increased aerial surveillance to detect fire starts and smoke columns from a distance, particularly in rugged or hard-to-reach areas. The goal is clear: drastically reduce response time to contain flames before they spread. This technological surveillance will be particularly reinforced around cereal crops to secure the national harvest.
Enhanced Territorial Coverage
Logistically, the plan involves significant human and material reinforcements. Lieutenant Colonel Mechri announced the creation of a seasonal center in Thibar to ensure immediate proximity in case of an alert in this sensitive area. In parallel, ten mobile units composed of specialized agents will be strategically deployed across the country's main forest and agricultural regions, ensuring optimal operational coverage throughout the season.
