Tunis Terrorism Court Hands Down Heavy Prison Sentences
The Criminal Chamber specialized in terrorism cases attached to the First Instance Court of Tunis delivered its verdict late last night.
- Former Prosecutor Béchir Akremi, who was dismissed from office, was sentenced to 23 years in prison.
- The conviction stems from two separate investigations linked to the martyr Chokri Belaïd’s case, specifically concerning the concealment of official documents.
In the same session, the court also sentenced Habib Ellouze, a senior figure in the Ennahdha movement, to 13 years behind bars.
These rulings underscore Tunisia’s ongoing crackdown on corruption and abuse of power within its judicial and political institutions, especially in matters tied to terrorism and high‑profile political cases.
