Authorities in the city of Kunming, in southwestern China, announced that a train collided with a group of railroad workers today, Thursday, resulting in the deaths of 11 people and injuring two others. This is the worst accident on the Chinese rail network in over 10 years. Officials stated that the accident occurred during a test of seismic monitoring equipment, when the train struck the workers as it passed through a curved section inside Luoyang city station, in Yunnan province. The station has resumed normal services, while an investigation is underway to determine the causes of the incident. The Chinese rail network is the largest in the world, spanning over 160,000 kilometers and recording billions of trips each year. Despite praise for its efficiency, the network has faced criticism after major accidents, including the 2011 accident in Zhejiang province, which killed 40 people and injured nearly 200. In 2021, nine people lost their lives when a train in Gansu province (northwest China) collided with workers on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway line.
