Tunisian Court Sentences Former Anti-Corruption Chief to 10 Years in Prison

A Specialized Criminal Chamber at the Tunis First Instance Court has convicted Chawki Tabib, the former head of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (INLUCC), to 10 years in prison.

According to a judicial source cited by the TAP news agency, Chawki Tabib was found guilty of "forgery, destruction, and use of forged documents." The case dates back to 2020 and involves documents that were falsified by Chawki Tabib and submitted to the parliament during his tenure as head of the anti-corruption agency.

The documents in question pertained to allegations of conflict of interest targeting the then-Prime Minister, Elyes Fakhfakh. As an attorney and former president of the Tunisian National Bar Association (ONAT), Chawki Tabib was removed from his position as head of the anti-corruption agency in August 2020 by Elyes Fakhfakh, just before the latter's resignation.

Although the defendant appeared in court voluntarily, he is currently subject to an arrest warrant issued by the investigating judge at the economic and financial pole in connection with a separate investigation based on a report by the Court of Auditors.
